Challenge

The power solutions manufacturer needed to manage an extremely high-variant hydraulic pump assembly process with hundreds of recipes and frequent changes, while maintaining traceability and standardizing execution and data governance across plants worldwide.

Solution

IndX designed and implemented a highly customized Siemens Opcenter Execution MES with automated, rules-based recipe management and control-layer integration, then led global rollouts with training, support and ongoing enhancements to sustain a scalable standardized Digital Manufacturing approach.

Project Activities

  • Assessed the customer’s high-variant assembly process and defined requirements for scalable recipe and workflow management
  • Selected Siemens Opcenter Execution (SIMATIC IT) as the MES platform to support complex, variable production
  • Designed a global MES approach to enable standardized execution and governance across sites
  • Developed a highly customized MES solution to manage hundreds of recipes per product family
  • Implemented rules-based recipe management to support variation handling and rapid change propagation
  • Enabled unit-level traceability across the hydraulic pump assembly line
  • Integrated the MES with the customer’s control layer to support high automation on the shop floor
  • Deployed the MES across multiple plants in North America, South America, Europe and Asia
  • Delivered onsite technical training and go-live support for each rollout
  • Provided ongoing IT support, solution governance and continuous enhancements aligned to the customer’s Industry 4.0 roadmap

Business Drivers

About the Project

The customer's highly variable manufacturing process presented an enormous problem for them and a big challenge for our consultants. The number of variants to be accounted for and managed were astronomical – the product could be manufactured in 500 different “flavors” – almost at the level of a car assembly process. Our team's aim was to build and deliver a flexible digital solution capable of managing the data and workflow of this process. In addition, our solution also aimed to provide traceability as well support to the shop floor operators who executed the complex assembly process.

Our team delivered a successful project with the design and implementation of a highly customized MES solution able to cope with the complex assembly process of the customer's hydraulic pumps, including handling a manifold variety of recipes and the traceability of their units along the assembly line. Leveraging Siemens Opcenter Execution (SIMATIC IT) MES software, the solution was built with a number of innovative customizations for high automation and a set of customer-specific rules for recipe management. Our IndX experts also completed the integration of the new MES with the customer's control layer. Finally, our team provided onsite technical training and support during and after each rollout.

IndX's Advantage

Since the first implementation of the new MES system, our team has been leading its deployment across customer sites worldwide, as well as providing full IT support and governance support for the solution. In addition, our team of specialists has continued to develop and augment the MES solution with new versions, taking into account the customer's evolving needs, adding new capabilities and features, and applying advancements in technology to address the same needs in a better, more scalable and more flexible way.

Our team of customer experts continues to help the customer define and execute their Industry 4.0 roadmap and maturity plan in order to ensure consistency in process, product and business management across not only all their power solutions plants, but all the different manufacturing divisions of their enterprise. This is a long-term partnership which showcases IndX's commitment to collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement. Our team looks forward to supporting the customer's digital transformation journey for many more years to come.
