What is Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)?
Overall Equipment Effectiveness is a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) that measures how well equipment in a manufacturing plant is utilized in relation to its full potential. OEE can be calculated by measuring and multiplying three separate factors: Equipment Availability, Manufacturing Performance and Manufacturing Quality. Together, these factors inform manufacturers on how well a plant is producing.
- Equipment Availability: the amount of time that equipment is operational
- Manufacturing Performance: the total output of product
- Manufacturing Quality: the count of good product being produced
The calculation of these three Key Performance Indicators are known as loss-related manufacturing factors because they are measured by the division of the actual and the ideal.
- Equipment Availability = Run Time / Planned Production Time
- Manufacturing Performance = (Total Count / Run Time) / Ideal Run Rate
- Manufacturing Quality = Good Count / Total Count
