About the Customer

Engineering Group’s Engineering Industries eXcellence team is excited to launch its first major Smart Transportation digitalization initiative in North America. The project, which kicks off this year, will result in an 18-kilometer (11-mile) light rail transit that aims to bring a new, environmentally-friendly and reliable method of transportation to a rapidly growing region in Canada. The multi-year program will involve a multitude of innovative parts, technologies and providers. Our team of experts will be responsible for designing and delivering a broad spectrum of critical systems covering Automation & Control, IoT Intelligence, Asset Performance Management, Physical Security and Industrial Cybersecurity.

  • Smart Transportation
  • Smart Infrastructure
  • Smart Rail
  • Light Rail Transit (LRT)

The Customer's Need

As the region grows, government leadership has recognized the need to support this growth, as well as its accompanying rise in population and tourism, in a sustainable and effective way. As a result, they have decided to invest in new infrastructure as a means of providing alternative transit choices to road travel for its citizens. The light rail transit initiative, one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the area, was identified as a top priority in order to provide the currently missing urban connection among a number of the region's growing cities and economic hubs.

  • Create alternatives to road travel to control traffic/pollution
  • Provide more transit options for growing population
  • Enable sustainable, reliable means of public transportation
  • Build a connection between growing cities and economic hubs

About the Project

The new transit system will feature 19 stations and stops, travel through 2 urban growth centers and connect to 4 major transit hubs along the route. The light rail will also have its own dedicated lane, ensuring a smooth, reliable and convenient ride along the region’s busiest street. Our global transportation practice, which has built a strong footprint delivering successful digitalization solutions and implementations to some of the biggest names in transportation across Europe and South America, will lead the delivery of 7 main technology areas for this North American project.

Our team will design, build and implement digital solutions covering:

  1. Automation & Control Systems, including PLC/SCADA implementation and integration to monitor and control equipment during light rail operations;
  2. Physical Security Systems, including providing Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) video surveillance and access control to stations and critical assets;
  3. Central Fire Systems, with automatic fire detection capabilities and integrated to inform the transit system’s central command center;
  4. IoT Data Management Systems, including collection and warehousing of all data related to connected field devices, Internet of Things sensors and media;
  5. Maintenance Management Information Systems, or MMIS, covering the planning and tracking of all light rail transit asset maintenance activities;
  6. Guideway Intrusion Detection Systems, or GIDS, designed to detect people entering stations or objects falling on the railway in order to ensure safety of people;
  7. Industrial Cybersecurity Systems, protecting the privacy and security of IT data flowing from transit's hardware/software to the central command center.

For each system to be delivered, our team will procure and implement the software and hardware required, the latter covering servers, desktops, field devices, cameras, door lockers, PLCs and sensors, including third-party products.

For each solution to be implemented, our team will provide end-to-end services, covering solution design, development, customization, configuration, integration, commissioning, training and support.

Engineering’s Advantage

Transportation projects are behemoths when it comes to budgets, timelines, regulations, technologies and moving parts. Technical expertise is simply not enough to be chosen or relied upon to deliver them successfully. Companies selected must be specialists, of course, but they must also have the solidity and scope of capabilities needed to successfully source and implement these complex solutions from start to finish. Not only does our Industries eXcellence transportation practice have a proven track record delivering rail projects of similar size and difficulty, but our global organization further ensures our credibility with 30 years of longevity and growth in this challenging sector. As we start our first yet impactful launch into Smart Transportation for North America, the future looks very bright.

  • Experience on similar projects – large, complex, rail market
  • Capabilities to provide comprehensive, integrated systems
  • Technical expertise in smart transportation technologies
  • Global organization with credibility and proven track record
