About the Customer
Engineering Industries eXcellence’s Design Automation team has reached a new milestone in a transformation project for a rising star in the Aerospace, Space & Defense industry. Our customer is a North American rocket manufacturer that is spearheading innovation in the aerospace sector with their 3D printed reusable rockets and a mission to bring humanity to Mars. Having worked with some of the largest and most impactful aerospace organizations in the world, Engineering IndX’s digital product design practice was chosen to contribute our Industry 4.0 services and technical expertise to the customer’s project for enhanced rocket design efficiency.

The Customer’s Need
When someone is trying to describe something extremely complex, they may liken it to “rocket science.” Rocket manufacturing involves the design and assembly of millions of parts, all of which are critical for a successful launch. Because of the intricacies involved, it can be quite a challenge to improve design efficiency and visualize assembly across the many systems and parts involved, but our customer was determined to find a way. They sought the services and digital expertise of Engineering Industries eXcellence to enhance their current design system interfaces and enable them to create a simplified version of their base rocket assembly design, which would be used as a launching pad for future projects and product iterations.

About the Project
The customer had previously implemented Siemens NX Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to manage all of their rocket design processes and files. Backed by deep technical expertise with Siemens Digital Industries products, Engineering IndX leveraged our Software Development expertise to enhance user experiences of the software. This began by defining the customer’s specific design and manufacturing needs. Next, our Design Automation team coded a unique application within Siemens NX CAD to augment user interfaces with customer-specific capabilities and remove unnecessary functionalities. This in turn reduced complexity for assembly and created an easier pathway for users to share simplified designs. With the new custom application, the rocket developer can now manage their launch-pad rocket design with less difficulty, visualize their designs in new and innovative ways, and set the stage for future seamless integration with manufacturing operations systems.
