While simulation is well-established during product design and verification, many organizations are still not employing this powerful methodology in the most critical stage of their value chain: the manufacturing of the product. As a result, they lose opportunities to study the behavior of their processes and systems before they are deployed. Many understand the possibilities simulation tools offer, but not everyone is convinced. One of the biggest obstacles to starting a project or acquiring new software is often getting the funding. In addition, most simulation initiatives that fail, fail for bad decisions made in the planning stages of the project. This year at Siemens Realize LIVE 2019, thanks to Engineering Industries eXcellence having built one of the leading practices for Manufacturing Plant Simulation and Manufacturing Process Simulation in North America, our expert Carlos Ortega was selected to speak on the topic in “Investing in Manufacturing Simulation 101.” Siemens caught up with Carlos during Realize LIVE to talk to him about his expertise in teaching manufacturers how to get their simulation initiatives off the ground and off the ground on the right foot. Hi, my name is Carlos Ortega, and I am a Digital Manufacturing and Simulation Consultant at Engineering Industries eXcellence. In this role, I am responsible for providing the business and technical expertise in Manufacturing Simulation technologies for the deployment of projects across North America. As a top simulation specialist and expert in the Siemens Tecnomatix product offering, I am also involved in pre-sales, training and a long list of other activities for this practice at Engineering Industries eXcellence. I have been lucky enough to be a part of this environment for 13 years. I enjoy my work a lot, and I think most people who meet me can see that!
This is my first time at Realize LIVE. I’m impressed, of course! There are a lot of people here with a lot of knowledge and a lot of companies searching for that knowledge. Now that manufacturing is pretty deep into the Industry 4.0 environment, so many new technologies, software applications and advancements are happening. It has been amazing to see that here at Realize LIVE. I have enjoyed this event a lot, especially seeing system integrators, software leaders and manufacturing companies coming together and trying to learn more and more. As a niche partner of Siemens specialized in their Digital Manufacturing offering, our team has received such amazing feedback from all our 5 sessions across different connections this year. In a word, I am just impressed with this experience and the value it brings to the Siemens software community in the Americas.
In the 13 years I have been working with industrial simulation technologies, I have worked with a number of different customers across a number of different sectors, but I have found the same challenge time and time again. Regardless of what they produce, enterprises continue to suffer from a disconnection between their design world and their manufacturing world. Even in this age of digitalization, that is still there! This remains the core question when approaching digital transformation: how can we create a seamless Digital Thread to get the right information from the business level to design engineering and all the way to manufacturing and execution on the shop floor? So, that is still the main challenge companies are looking to address, and this happens to be our area of expertise as a system integrator. More and more, customers are coming to us not for point solutions, but for help implementing that Digital Thread everyone dreams of...and, we have it! Many speak about it, but we have the products, the integrations and the customer success stories to prove it. People are still looking for that. And while companies continue to seek the Digital Thread, we will be here to help them rise to the occasion, overcome any challenges and make it a reality for their organization.
For this Plant Simulation presentation at Realize LIVE 2019 called “Investing in Manufacturing Simulation 101,” I took a different approach. Before, I have always gone in the direction of being more technical or showing successful projects and/or success stories. For this one, however, I took a step back. I am trying to help attendees and users better understand what must happen before starting a simulation initiative for it to succeed. Also, while many understand the possibilities simulation tools offer, not everyone is convinced. It is clear that the biggest obstacle to starting a project or acquiring new software is often funding. In this session, I will also share my best practices when trying to get a simulation initiative off the ground.
From my experience, most simulation initiatives that go wrong, go wrong for a list of reasons that can and should be eliminated right at the start. I will share how we can avoid these common mistakes and how we can plan in the right way in order to have a successful result. And, of course, all of this is tied together with Industry 4.0, as simulation is the connecting and critical key between the virtual and physical worlds of manufacturing. I am proud to share my insights and the expertise of Engineering Industries eXcellence’s world-class simulation team in this space.
