Engineering Showcase at AREA & DMDII’s 2nd Annual Augmented Reality Workshop

February 7-8, 2018, UI LABS-DMDII, Chicago – The AREA (Augmented Reality for Enterprise Alliance) and DMDII (Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute) hosted their annual workshop focused on the future of Augmented Reality (AR) in the industrial setting last week at UI LABS Innovation Center in Chicago. The event provided an opportunity for manufacturers and AR providers to openly discuss the unique challenges and applications of AR technology in an industrial setting and featured a showcase of cutting-edge AR technology in addition to speakers, a panel discussion on change management led by AREA, and interactive sessions on AR safety led by Boeing and security led by Brainwaive LLC.

As a partner of DMDII since its inception, Engineering’s expert Manufacturing Operations team supported the event together with partner OverIT, a leader in Field Management and Augmented Reality technology solutions for the industrial setting. Our table at the technology expo showcased the latest in our offering for Manufacturing Simulation, Virtual Commissioning and Augmented Reality. The event was a big success for all participants.

According to Amanda Quick, Director of Program Design at DMDII, “The DMDII and AREA Augmented Workshop is a one of-a-kind event that brings together AR users and providers, such as Engineering, to have a transparent discussion about the state of the industry, current AR solutions, and the needs of the end user which directly informs future technology development and increases the ability of the manufacturing sector to harness the power of Augmented Reality. This workshop is an example of how DMDII convenes innovators to help manufacturers forge their future.”

Engineering’s team was very excited about interfacing with manufacturers and thought leaders directly to learn about their pain points and the direction they want to see with AR technology in the industrial environment.

Matt Scanlan, Associate Partner at Engineering, sees major opportunities in the space: “A lot of our customers today are forming digital manufacturing groups. They understand that there is a lot of value in digital manufacturing and they want to see where this technology is going. And one of the areas where we are getting a lot of interest is Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality devices.”
Felipe Jung, Regional Sales Manager for OverIT, added: "We are very happy to support Engineering at this event and to showcase SPACE 1, a suite of AR products tailored for manufacturing and maintenance. We are excited to bring awareness of our solution to all the players here at the workshop, and we are looking forward to their feedback."

There is no doubt following the workshop that incredible conversations happen when business, academia, government, manufacturers and innovative solution providers come together in one room to solve industry challenges. Engineering looks forward to working more closely with partner OverIT, as well as with the AREA and DMDII organizations, to lead the push forward in the manufacturing Augmented Reality technology space.

About UI Labs & DMDII

UI LABS is an innovation accelerator that leverages its network of hundreds of partners from universities + industries, starting with manufacturing and infrastructure, using digital technology. We drive value for our partners and help make the U.S. economy and workforce the most productive in the world. In February 2014, UI LABS announced the formation of its first innovation platform, the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense, to transform American manufacturing through the digitization of the supply chain. DMDII’s goal is to provide U.S. factories with the tools, software and expertise they need to build things more efficiently, less expensively, and more quickly, so they can win more business and bring jobs back to the United States.
