Defense Trends, Challenges & Opportunities

In recent years, we have witnessed threats and global phenomena of various kinds. These have required, and continue to require, significant defense interventions on the part of governments. In addition to its foundation at the territorial level, the defense realm has also expanded to other areas of society, including to the economic and financial sectors, and above all to the cyber front. The chessboard on which defensive actions are taken has changed significantly, becoming increasingly widespread and multidimensional.

On a global level, beginning with the years following the Cold War, spending in defense budgets has continued to grow, reaching a peak of $1,822 billion in 2018, with a growth of 2.6% compared to the previous year. The country with the largest defense budget continues to be the United States, with over $634 billion planned for 2018 (accounting for approximately 35% of global spending), growing by 4.6% compared to 2017 and with a further 7% growth expected for 2019. Immediately after this, we find China, Saudi Arabia, India and France. Together, these five countries make up 60% of global military spending. Even in Europe, budgets increased by 2.6% in 2018, exceeding the 2% minimum target set by NATO.

Keeping all the above in mind, let's talk about what is happening in this space today. The Digital Defense, Aerospace & Homeland Security sector is characterized by a number of different challenges, which continue to evolve over time, in line with the latest methodologies and software available on the market. To stay ahead of the evolution, defense departments, which are part of a nation's public administration, must rely heavily on the private sector to ensure the adoption and utilization of cutting-edge technologies to mitigate the risk of obsolescence.

Defense departments today must form alliances with strategic technology partners capable of providing skills, expertise and knowledge complementary to their own. To do so, governments can no longer rely solely on their traditional suppliers, in other words only on companies in the defense sector. They must also turn their attention to partners in the technology, services and system integration sectors, companies that invest far more heavily in Research & Development than they can, and companies that are driving the digital transformation and advancement of the defense industry. This is where Engineering steps in to play.

Digital Defense, Aerospace & Homeland Security

Engineering Group’s portfolio of platforms, solutions and services for Digital Defense, Aerospace & Homeland Security aims to enable the secure acquisition, management and distribution of data concerning military and homeland security and operations, as well as internal logistical support for sea, land, air, space and cybernetic domains.

In the last twenty years, our global organization has achieved a key goal by acting proactively and responsibly. We have established ourselves as a credible and reliable technological partner for national and international institutions dealing with defense and security. Moving forward, Engineering's mission in the Digital Defense, Aerospace & Homeland Security domain continues to be focused on the achievement of three macro-objectives:

  • Promoting the "dual use" paradigm in military and civil defense, which favors the reuse of acquired skills, expertise and solutions implemented in both sectors;
  • Contributing proactively to technical, technological and process-related innovation in highly specialized defense domains;
  • Supporting defense customers and their end users throughout the digital transformation process.

Engineering Group has developed a specific framework and portfolio map to describe its end-to-end skills and expertise in Digital Defense, Aerospace & Homeland Security, focused in the areas of intelligence, defense, maritime, space and homeland security. Engineering Group: Industries eXcellence for Defense Manufacturing

In the United States, our group of Industries eXcellence experts is engaged in manufacturing projects that also cover the needs of the Digital Defense, Aerospace & Homeland Security domain. In this market segment, manufacturing is directly targeted at government agencies and calls for compliance with very strict guidelines and regulations. This is of particular importance to the United States government, which ranks among the major world powers in terms of the strength and capabilities of its Army, Navy and Air Force. For many years now, our Industries eXcellence team has been working in this sector and providing consulting, technology solutions and system integration services focused on Industry 4.0 to the United States Department of Defense (DoD).

Defense Fleet Readiness

When talking about U.S. defense, it is all about readiness. Manufacturers are tasked to produce planes, jets, submarines and aircraft that are superior in how quickly they can respond to an attack and jump into action against enemies. Consequently, the primary aim of the technology solutions we deliver and the work that we do for the U.S. DoD is to improve efficiencies of the products produced, in addition to saving money in terms of manufacturing efficiencies. Product quality and performance is the main focus in this industry.

Complex Assembly & Supply Chain

In order to produce and repair the highly complex, confidential and expensive equipment and machinery utilized by the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force, the U.S. government leverages and regulates an extensive supply chain of manufacturers, contractors and suppliers. While this presents a huge opportunity for chosen manufacturers, it also places a huge amount of pressure in terms of time-to-market, efficiency and quality in the way they produce and the final product they deliver. Our team works both directly with the U.S. government and often with their suppliers. Given our expertise in different industrial sectors, processes and across the spectrum of technologies and tools for Digital Manufacturing, Engineering Group can support the entire supply chain and build lifecycle of some of the most complex and advanced products on Earth.

Digital Manufacturing, Repair & Maintenance

Our Industries eXcellence team is involved in helping build nuclear submarines, radar systems, ground vehicles, fighter jets and navy shipyards for the U.S. government. First, our team drives digital transformation from the manufacturing side; we deliver and integrate IT systems that manage the data and the execution of products being fabricated. Second, our team delivers solutions to optimize the repair side of defense equipment. U.S. ships and submarines, for example, must go in for maintenance and repair every so often. The U.S government relies on trusted suppliers to execute and expedite this process, to ensure that these vehicles can be put back into action as soon as possible. Engineering's Industries eXcellence team helps these suppliers leverage the latest technology to ensure the most efficient processes in getting equipment back into service as fast as possible.

When it comes to technology, defense contractors responsible for manufacturing the aircraft and vessels for the U.S. defense arsenal are looking to improve how quickly and how efficiently they can design and manufacture their products. Our expertise in the entire spectrum of digital technologies for Aerospace, Space & Defense Manufacturing enables us to deliver these industry-specific solutions and system integration services needed to help manufacturers achieve these goals and meet strict regulatory requirements at the same time.
