The Customer’s Need
In the United States, the transition by automotive manufacturers to electric vehicles is increasing every year, and with that has come the push to produce battery cells domestically rather than continue relying on overseas manufacturers. According to a commissioned report by the NRDC, it is expected that nearly $210 billion will be invested in U.S. battery cell and EV manufacturing by 2030, more than in any other country.
Our customer required a robust and traceable infrastructure to meet the highest regulations for production, quality and logistics. Engineering IndX’s specialists were chosen for this initiative because of their combined technical expertise, hands-on experience and deep understanding of the EV and battery industries. To support this initiative, our team has been tasked with designing the layout of 4 production lines in their 21-gigawatt factory, implementing an MES and IT infrastructure, and integrating the customer’s systems across their new facility. The customer’s primary objective is to establish full traceability throughout their manufacturing processes.

About the Project
In the assessment phase, Engineering Industries eXcellence’s MOM Discrete team conducted in-depth manufacturing analyses to align with the customer’s specific needs and develop a clear implementation strategy. We are now advancing through the execution phase, designing the customer’s production lines to run primarily on the Siemens Opcenter Execution suite of MES solutions, including APS, IPL, PAC and RD&L. From an IT perspective, we are implementing Ignition software for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA). In this regard, our experts are designing the IT infrastructure to collect massive volumes of data efficiently from high-rate production and helping decide which communication protocols are best to share data. The key function we are enabling through this project is manufacturing traceability, which includes material movements tracking, automated guided vehicle (AGV) tracking, and automatic storage and retrieval systems (ASRS). Additionally, our experts are implementing and integrating these technologies with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) systems to ensure performance and quality.
