Engineering Industries eXcellence is upgrading a global valve manufacturer’s custom design portal to extend capabilities and enable data management across the enterprise. The valve leader is a long-time digital transformation customer that develops process technologies for the pulp, paper and energy industries. As the scale of the customer’s business has grown and operational needs have shifted, so must their supporting technology. Our Digital Engineering team is leveraging our programming, software development and design analysis expertise to modernize the customer’s valve design platform and make back-end data more accurate and accessible.

The Customer’s Need
For over two decades, Engineering Industries eXcellence has been the valve manufacturer’s go-to partner for digital transformation. Ten years ago, our Design Automation team delivered the software interface that we are now modernizing. The original application was structured for a business that has since grown and changed shape through acquisition. Back then, the local platform was managed by a single high-level administrator and served a much smaller user base. Today, with research and production facilities located around the world, the valve leader needs a global, web-based application with functionalities beyond its previous limits. The new solution must enable user groups in different regions to own and manage the data of customers from their respective countries. The solution also needs to be user-friendly, able to process larger quantities of data, and be easily taught and independently managed.

About the Project
The valve design tool works like this: A customer chooses from a drop-down menu of valve types, actuators and linkage for their desired system. There are tens of thousands of parts available, and the design application automatically filters out incongruent parts based on the selected specifications. Next, the user selects the orientation and mounting accessories. Last, the software tool generates the valve design drawings in various 2D and 3D file formats. This tool saves our customer precious time and resources by streamlining the design and sales process for valve systems.
For this modernization initiative, our Digital Engineering team focused on two key upgrades. First, we enabled enterprise-wide administrative access to the application by making it web-based. Rather than having one administrator able to access and edit the valve part database, we expanded that functionality and made it so that administrators across global user groups can own and manage their valve part and customer data. Second, we improved the baseline functionalities of the software to enable bulk uploads of part designs and system feedback to catch errors. Whereas the old system only allowed parts to be updated one at a time, now the customer can save a significant amount of administrative manpower with bulk updates. Additionally, the automatic system feedback will ensure fewer mistakes in valve generation by catching errors in the valve part data as they are uploaded. Our Industries eXcellence team will always be there to support this long-time customer, but we are confident that this comprehensive, future-proof software package will enable the valve manufacturer to achieve long-term success independently, ensuring they won't need to rely on external support to maximize the benefits of their new solution.
