About The AnyLogic Conference 2021

Hosted by our technology partner AnyLogic, The AnyLogic Conference will be a unique one-day online demonstration of simulation modeling from the AnyLogic team and some of the world's most successful companies, including Engineering Industries eXcellence and our Engineering Industries eXcellence division. Truly global, AnyLogic Conference 2021 will follow the sun. Throughout the day, you can join live presentations in multiple time zones around the world. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn how simulation is applied across multiple industries, network with leading experts and share in ground-breaking ideas that will expand your vision of the possibilities with simulation.

With one of the few technology practices in the world dedicated to industrial simulation and data analytics for industrial process optimization, Engineering Group and our Engineering Industries eXcellence division have the business process expertise, industry experience and technical knowledge that manufacturers need to launch or advance their dive into the world of simulation and data. Make sure to join our sessions below.

Session 1:

Performance Evaluation Tool for Flexible Manufacturing Systems

Speakers:

Roberto Grugni - Simulation Modeling Expert, Engineering Industries eXcellence, Engineering Group

Giuseppe Fogliazza - Director of Machining Centers, MCM Machining Centers Manufacturing S.p.A.

Time Slot:

8:00 a.m. CST (3:00 PM UTC+1)

Summary:

The modern machining shop floor requires production systems capable of adapting to the evolving nature of production problems. For technological and economic reasons, these systems should be automated, enabling autonomous operation for long periods of time.

Flexible Manufacturing Systems – the name of the game. By integrating multiple functionalities with flexible automation, FMS are complex systems to say the least. For this reason, they tend to raise numerous issues for their suppliers, such as:

  • their real behavior is not completely known after their installation;
  • having to operate for long periods, they often require reconfiguration (how to add or replace machines, or introduce new automation?);
  • control policies need to be able to adapt to the evolution of the system as well;
  • due to the high cost of the machinery, precise dimensioning is mandatory in order to be competitive on the market.

MCM Machining Centers Manufacturing S.p.A., a leading Italian company in the design and manufacture of high-precision machining centers, automation and Flexible Manufacturing Systems, was looking for a tool to help them govern precisely these problems. For this reason, MCM turned to the Engineering Group that, with its Engineering Industries eXcellence division, is specialized in delivering digital solutions for industrial process automation and optimization. The two companies selected AnyLogic as the simulation platform that best suits MCM’s business and operational requirements.

Join our session led by Engineering Group and MCM Machining Centers Manufacturing S.p.A. to learn about this use case and how it transformed our customer’s business.

Session 2:

Reinforcement Learning for Simulation: Business Advantages & Use Cases

Speakers:

Chris Nicholson - CEO, Pathmind

Edward Junprung - Head of Customer Success, Pathmind

Dayana Cope - Director of Simulation, Engineering Industries eXcellence, Engineering Industries eXcellence

Augustin Albinati - Senior Data Science Analyst, Accenture AI

Brian Erik Ovrum - Senior Data Science Consultant, Accenture AI

Time Slot:

1:00 p.m. CST (8:00 p.m. UTC+1)

Summary:

Join Pathmind, Engineering Industries eXcellence and Accenture Applied Intelligence for a presentation that will explore the business values of adopting reinforcement learning for simulation and showcase how organizations across industries are reaching their goals with simulation and AI.

Reinforcement learning, or RL, for simulation offers significant business advantages by replacing optimizers and heuristics with smarter, faster AI-trained decision agents. Compared to more traditional optimization methods, reinforcement learning can produce equivalent or better results in less time and is more adaptable to accommodate changing data.

Pathmind makes pairing reinforcement learning and simulation easy by handling the AI, so users can focus on their simulations and business goals. Anyone comfortable using AnyLogic can apply reinforcement learning with Pathmind – no data science knowledge required or proprietary coding languages to learn.

During the presentation, the Engineering Engineering Industries eXcellence team will share how Pathmind helped to optimize a flexible manufacturing system production line to increase order processing speed and improve other KPIs. Accenture Applied Intelligence will showcase how they were able to increase efficiency in a fulfillment center by using Pathmind reinforcement learning to improve putaway and picking processes. Topics covered in this session include:

  • Introduction to reinforcement learning for simulation;
  • RL vs. heuristics and optimizers;
  • Business values of RL for simulation;
  • Use case: flexible manufacturing scheduling and operations;
  • Use case: warehouse picking and putaway processes powered by RL.
